Kitchen design and use in the 1960s were certainly different from what they are today. When John and Blanche bought their home, which was built in the 1960s, they needed to maximize the usefulness of their kitchen, as it was smaller than the kitchens we build today. Bound by a number of factors, we were not able to enlarge the kitchen footprint within their home.

We set to work laying out cabinets to help them get the most out of their space while still retaining the breakfast area. By removing the fur-down, we were able to build taller upper cabinets, thereby gaining additional storage space. We also changed the layout of the appliances to help the kitchen function more intuitively.

Their custom-built cabinets feature stained raised-panel doors, which fit very well with the traditional style of the home. The decorative glass they chose truly personalized the kitchen.

We also built a custom mantel and stairs.

A fun fact about this remodel: At the time of the plumbing inspection, the city inspector found the original green tag from the 1960s—construction speak for passing inspection!
